The Pangasinan State University has been in collaboration with Tanggol Kalikasan since CY 2005. A memorandum of agreement among the three partners sealed the establishment of the institute on C.Y. 2005 and named it as Institute of Environmental Governance – Pangasinan State University (PSU-IEG).
The Institute of Environmental Governance was established, nationwide and housed in different Academic Institutions, in response to the ever-increasing demand for training and capacity-building needs of local governments. The institute caters to two levels. Level one (1) is designed to serve the needs of Barangay Officials while level two (2) caters to the needs of Municipal and Provincial Officials.
Just recently, the University through its dynamic and visionary President Dr. Dexter R. Buted signed a Memorandum of Agreement with and renewed the partnership with Tanggoll Kalikasan to implement a Program entitled: Environmental Justice Sector Reform Program (EJSRP) with funds from the United State Department of Interior and International Narcotics and Law Enforcement (USDOI-INL). EJSRP is a national program involving three (3) IEG centers: Pangasinan State University, Central Luzon State University, and Palawan State University. The program includes a biophysical assessment of the coastal areas covered, capacity building (trainers, barangay, and elected officials), and knowledge exchange visits of the IEG staff, and municipal and provincial officials in other countries. The program aims to enhance biodiversity conservation actions and ensure the protection of the remaining wildlife in the habitats by raising awareness and strengthening the capacity and technical skills of the local government officials and trainers on environmental governance and law enforcement as mandated to them, and transferring best practices and strategies on biodiversity conservation and park or protected area management from the experiences of government officials and agencies in the Asia Pacific Region and the United States of America.
