The Sigay Festival, aptly named “Fish Harvest,” is an annual celebration that underscores the remarkable biodiversity of Binmaley, which has earned its reputation as the Seafood Capital of the North. This festival is not just a local feast but a grand showcase of the region’s aquatic richness and its crucial role in sustaining the livelihoods of the local communities. At the heart of this festival lies the “Kambog na Tilapia tan Pantat” competition, a spirited contest that draws fisherfolk from across the region to demonstrate their dexterity and deep-rooted fishing traditions.

Binmaley’s waters are teeming with a variety of species, reflecting a marine ecosystem that is both diverse and bountiful. The festival’s activities are designed to highlight the wide array of seafood available in the region, including tilapia and the native hito (catfish), which are central to the competition. The event is a testament to the sustainable fishing practices that have been maintained and honed over generations, ensuring that the marine life continues to thrive.

On January 31, 2022, the Sigay Festival’s competition was a focal point for celebrating Binmaley’s status as a center of excellence in fisheries. Orchestrated under the guidance of Hon. Pedro A. Merrera III and supported by Dr. Marie Claire B. Briones, the event was a microcosm of the larger ecological tapestry. Five competitors raced against time to catch fish in a concrete tank, a challenging activity that mirrors the daily experiences of fisherfolk who navigate the vast and abundant waters of Binmaley.

This competition is more than just a display of skill; it’s a cultural expression that highlights the importance of preserving the diverse marine life for the sustainability of the industry. It reminds attendees and participants of the delicate balance between man and nature and the need to protect the marine habitats that are fundamental to Binmaley’s identity and prosperity. As the Seafood Capital of the North, Binmaley not only celebrates the abundance it is blessed with but also reminds us of the collective responsibility to safeguard this wealth for the prosperity of current and future generations.
