Backyard Catfish farming was a project between Pangasinan State University-Binmaley Campus (implemententing agency) and Department of Social Welfare and Development (DSWD) Field office Region 1 (funding agency) which aims to provide alternative Catfish farming as a low-cost technology that can be adopted and commercialized at the community – level if appropriate institutional and technical supports are provided. This technology can contribute in addressing the need for food supply, protein source and increase disposable income or marginal stakeholders in rural communities.
The said training was done in the municipality of Anda and Lingayen, Pangasinan and intended for 4P’s member (families that are classified as poorest of the poor and included in Pantawid Pamilyang Pilipino Program (4Ps) or conditional cash transfer program of the national government) and the event was conducted last June 30 to July 1, 2018
A total of 35 beneficiaries were included in the project, of which 20 participants came from Lingayen while15 participants came from Anda. The training covers a lecture proper which discusses the recent technology on catfish farming, site inspection for the proposed backyard catfish farming and field trip in a private hatchery for catfish and also at the Bureau of Fisheries Aquatic Resources (BFAR-NIFTDC) National Integrated Fisheries Technology and Development Center in Dagupan City.
